Gary Cowell opened his converted eight service bay dealership on December 1, 1967. He had four staff, and sold two new and one used vehicles that month. By 1972 Cowell Volkswagen had outgrown the original space, resulting Gary purchasing the property next door and building a brand new building that housed not only Volkswagen, but also Audi and Porsches


Without a doubt, Cowell Auto Group is an industry leader. They were one of the first dealerships to relocated to the Richmond Auto Mall, as Gary Cowell was one of the founders in 1985. Today, the Cowell family not only owns Cowell Volkswagen, but Audi of Richmond, Jaguar Richmond and Land Rover of Richmond, all located in the Richmond Auto Mall, and employs over 160 people.


Cowell?s two sons Ryan and Rand Cowell now both work in the business. They are university and Dealer Academy graduates who were encouraged to broadly explore all career opportunities, but like their father, they love the automotive industry. Ryan and Rand are both very positive about the future of the company, the products that they offer and the staff and customers that they work with on a daily basis.
